The theme of reaction relates to the Boxer Rebellion. The Boxer Rebellion caused a wide-spread reaction . Many people were killed due to their religion or for being a foreigner in China. After so many Christians and foreigners were killed, countries started to send soldiers to China. The countries Britain, France, Russia, America, Germany, and Japan started sending soldiers and fought their way through China to Beijing. Over 20,000 soldiers were sent to China to try to save the foreigners and Christians. Finally, China lost, and the rest of the Christians and foreigners were saved.

The theme of reform also relates to the Boxer Rebellion. China's government was a dynasty. A dynasty is a sequence of hereditary rulers. An emperor and empress ruled over China. After the Boxer Rebellion, China became a republic,which is a form of government ruled by elected leaders. After the emperor was defeated by the westerns, it weakened the Chinese dynasty and hastened the Republican Revolution of 1911 that overthrew the empress, and her nephew emperor, and made China a republic.
